‘Shaping the Future’ was the theme of this year’s IB Conference in Singapore and it was inspiring to see more than 1800 IB educators and heads gathered from around the world to talk about the future of education. Highlights included Taryn Bond Clegg‘s challenge to “be a rebel not a robot”, which centred around her own experiences of moving from a compliant educator to one who challenges the system. She spoke about her team’s development of Studio 5, a programme that aims for student design and ownership of their own learning. The University of Melbourne’s Dr. Jared Cooney Howarth presentation, ‘The Learning Trajectory – From Surface to Deep to Transfer’, explored what contemporary brain and neuroscience research is telling us about the way humans learn and the complexities and conditions required for shallow to deep to transfer learning to occur. Josh Smith, my colleague from UNIS Hanoi, spoke passionately about the role that the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals can play in schools in his Presentation on Education for Sustainability. More to come.
